Social Justice

Social Justice is the way we live out our lives as Disciples of Jesus. We are God’s hands in the world and must react accordingly. Our school’s strategic plan focusses on our ability to be disciples of Jesus and reach out to others in our parish and broader communities in Australia and around the world. We also participate in numerous Social Justice activities in the wider community.

Our Year 6 Social Justice Ministry and Parent Social Justice Group actively engage the school and parish community in a number of initiatives. Our students have many opportunities to actively express their deep commitment to Gospel values such as trust, acceptance, respect, compassion, responsibility and service to others.

Following is a small snapshot of the social justice initiatives that we are involved in at Holy Family Catholic Primary School, and are a few examples where the words of our Visioning Mission have been put into action. We believe it is through actions such as these that we truly live as disciples of Jesus.

  • We support three main Catholic organisations: St Vincent de Paul Society, Caritas Australia and Catholic Mission.
  • We support St Vincent de Paul Society’s two main appeals. Through the annual Winter Appeal we support the Matthew Talbot Hostel by donating blankets, clothing, food and other supplies to give to homeless in Sydney. We also support the Christmas Appeal by donating large hampers to the growing number of families in need in the Waterloo area, as well as Our Lady of Mount Saint Carmel School.
  • Project Compassion during the time of Lent is a very large initiative that we support through financial donations. The children are very responsive during this time and donate generously to Caritas Australia.
  • During the Mission month of October the children participate in a range of fundraising initiatives to raise money for Catholic Mission Australia. In 2016 our fundraising in Mission Month included a Crazy Sock Day which enabled our school to raise significant amounts of money to donate to needy children in Mongolia.
  • Since 2005 Holy Family has sponsored one teacher and two students at the School of St Jude in Tanzania. St. Jude’s was started in 2002 by Australian Gemma Sisia (nee Rice) to service the orphaned and vulnerable children in the lowest socio-economic class in Tanzania. The primary school is supported solely by sponsorship donations. If you are interested in reading our sponsored child's  Zera Filemon Mshana's Term 2 school report please download.

At Holy Family we believe that Social Justice is about respecting human dignity and promoting the common good. As Catholics we are called to respond to those in need and work for justice and peace.
